Views From The Lonbox Christmas 2009 Special

Here it is, folks!  The 2009 Christmas episode of Views.  While it wasn’t the epic special I wanted it to be I think it turned out pretty good.  The year I chose three stories from the DC Universe Christmas trade paperback from 2000 to discuss and have some fun with.  First we go to the 30th Century and see how Superboy pushes his own agenda on the Legion of Super-Heroes.  Then we travel to the Old West and see how Bat Lash doesn’t miss a detail.  Finally we go to the Golden Age of comic books and witness Superman’s Christmas Adventure.  During all of this we have Christmas music from Frank Sinatra, John Denver, Mannheim Steamroller, Trans-Siberian Orchestra and the Muppets!  Finally I have a special surprise…a Christmas classic that was a lot of fun to record.

I hope you like what I have produced and more importantly I hope you have a very Merry Christmas or whichever holiday you choose to celebrate!

Take care!

Episode 97 Part 2: 1997 or “The Single Life”

The end is nigh…at least of this thirteen part series looking back at my misspent youth leading up to the epic, epic, EPIC episode 100.  This week Shag and I wrap up (if talking for two hours can be called “wrapping it up”) the year 1997.  We kick things off with talking up the films Men in Black, Batman and Robin, Spawn and Steel.  If you can make it through that then the comic talk and personal reminisces starts in earnest as we discuss such things as Heroes Return, Faces of the DCU, New Year’s Evil, Superman Red/Superman Blue, how my sister messed things up for me and this girl I really like,  how I screwed things up for myself with a rather attractive lady, the return of Lex Luthor: Bad Ass Villain, why Superman Secret Files and Origins #1 was so damn important (at least to me) and much, much more.

As usual you can check out Shag’s Internet content at Once Upon a Geek and Firestorm Fan.  If you haven’t checked these blogs out yet do so now.

Next week: The Christmas Episode.  I hope.  It is going to be kind of low key but I that’s the sort of mood I’m in this year.

Episode 97 Part 1: 1997 or “The Single Life”

We’re nearing the end folks and this week I am joined once again by my semi-regular co-host The Irredeemable Shag and because we can’t get together without running our mouths for at least three hours I am splitting this one up into two easier to digest segments.  In this first part I break down how I spent most of my nights and weekends in 1997, which includes a run in with a madame…yes, that sort of madame.  In addition Shag and I talk Electro-Blue Superman, how my comic collection got horribly out of control, how I got the Peter David run of the Hulk, the vomit room, the Pulp Heroes (DC’s 1997 Annual event), The Kents, Secret Files and Origins, the death of Wonder Woman, the new Golden Age Wonder Woman, how Shag didn’t like Superboy and the Ravers and  the first appearance of Arrowette.

Come back on Friday for the exciting and maybe even dramatic conclusion.

As usual you can check out Shag’s Internet content at Once Upon a Geek and Firestorm Fan.  If you haven’t checked these blogs out yet do so now.

See you on Friday.

Episode 96: 1996 or Year One in Georgia

Continuing the 13 part series leading up the to the epic, epic, EPIC episode 100 I tackle yet another year in the life of my collecting life.  1996 was my first full year in Georgia and not only was it an interesting year for me personally there were a lot of good comics as well.  Clark and Lois break up and then get back together again, Gotham is hit by a plague, the rematch between Batman and Bane went down, hero fought hero in Kingdom Come, Onslaught wreaks havoc on the Marvel Universe, Heroes Reborn launches a supposedly new era in Marvel history and the Wedding of the Century happens…twice.  All of this and boatloads of personal anecdotes too.

I have been on a couple of podcasts recently.  Check out Better in the Dark, hosted by Thomas and Derrick.  I was on two episodes of their show to talk Superman.  Also I was on two episodes of Two True Freaks. One episode was a comic related show and the other was all about Indiana Jones.  I had a great time on both of these shows and hope that you check them out.

Come back next week for 1997 and hopefully the Irredeemable Shag.

Thanksgiving 2009

Hey, all!  Since Thanksgiving is here I thought it might be fun to sit down and record a little something or other to tell what I am thankful for this year.  2009 has been bad in certain spots, but as far as Views goes and my podcasting life in general I have much to be appreciative about.

I hope you enjoy this and I hope you all (those that celebrate it at any rate) have a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

Oh, the sound is a little off.  I have a new headset and there seems to be an issue somewhere.  Just a heads up.

Thank you all for listening to the show.

Episode 95: 1995 or Leavin’ Is A Pretty Good Way To Go

Against all odds I managed to get another episode out less than two weeks after the last one.  Views has moved to Monday (or there abouts) just in time for the 1995 leg of the 13 part series leading up to the epic, epic episode 100.  This time out I go through my last year in Pennsylvania, which made me a little sad really.  Despite this I talk about a fair amount of comics including The Death of Clark Kent, the Year One annuals, a couple of Elseworld stories and the phenomenon that was Batman Forever.  All of this and boatloads of personal stuff too including a break up and a move to another state.

I have started another podcast with my buddy Scott Gardner.  It is called Tales of the Justice Society of America and the first episode is out and ready for you to listen to.  You can check out the Fortress of Baileytude post about it or you can head over to the Two True Freaks Libsyn page and get it there.  Either way it has been a lot of fun talking the JSA with Scott.  As a matter of fact check out the Two True Freaks Libsyn page anyway to check out the other podcasts Scott does; Two True Freaks (which I have been on quite a bit lately) and Back to the Bins.  I was on and will be on both now and soon, so check those out.

Speaking of podcasts I have appeared on lately check out Better in the Dark, hosted by Thomas and Derrick as this is the big Superman episode that they asked me to be on.  The second part should be out any minute now so keep an eye from that.  Until then check out Better in the Dark and DJ’s Comics Cavalcade, also hosted by Thomas, as both are great shows that deserve the attention.

Next week: 1996.  The first full year in Georgia.

This one might take a while.

Views From The Longbox Special: Catharsis or Having Some Problems Here

As promised here is that special episode of Views I was talking about in episode 94 and frankly I am a little nervous.  This is probably the most negative I have ever gotten on an episode of Views, even a special one, but this has been building for some time now and this is my attempt to get all of my thoughts out there and hopefully move on in some way, form or fashion.  The sad thing is the bulk of the complaining involves my favorite character of all time; Superman.  I have a lot of problems…I mean a lot of problems with the current direction the Superman books are taking.  That is not to say that the people working on these books are not talented or are not working hard or are producing inferior work.  I just plain don’t like where things seem to be going and I spend a little over an hour and a half going over why.

Joining me is my good friend Scott Gardner.  Scott is the co-host on Two True Freaks and Back to the Bins and over the past several months he and I have had numerous conversations about Superman, so it seemed like a good idea to have him on this special episode to talk it out and essentially have someone that is on my side so to speak.  I think the conversation went pretty well and I am glad we were able to do this.  Check out both of Scott’s podcasts and stay tuned to the end of the episode where Scott and I make a big announcement about something we are working on.

Yes, folks.  I am doing yet another podcast, but this one is going to be really cool.

Episode 94: 1994 or “Graduation”

And…we’re back!

Or I guess I’m back since this is another solo episode.  Sorry I haven’t posted one of these in a month.  I caught a really nasty flu that took me out for over a week and then I just got buried in work and real life and such.  Hopefully…hopefully I will be on track for the rest of the month.

This week I continue my thirteen part series where I reveal all of the juicy details of my early years of life and comic book collecting by looking at 1994.  1994 was another one of those pivotal years as that was the year I graduated from high school.  The episode runs about two hours and is just as heavy with the personal stuff as it is with the comic stuff.  The comic stuff is indeed there, though and I go through the Superman books of 1994 and all of the books I got into after Zero Hour.  So lots of Batman, Flash and Green Lantern talk in addition to my love for the Worlds Collide crossover.  Plus I have some e-mails to go through as well.  All of that plus color-forms covers as well.

Oh, quick heads up.  The music clip is a little odd for this year.  All of it is explained, but I just wanted you to be prepared for a departure from the last batch of episodes.

Come back on Monday (again, hopefully) as I am joined by Scott Gardner of Two True Freaks as we talk about the current state of Superman books and when I write “talk” I really mean we complain.  A lot.  So if you don’t want to hear people saying bad things about the Superman books you might want to skip this one.  If all works out the third installment of will come out on Wednesday.  Thomas Deja joins me again as does Shag and much fun was had by all.

Next week; 1995.  The last year in Pennsylvania.

Sigh.

And now…the rest of the story.

Or at the very least the rest of the episode.  This time out Shag and I finish up our thoughts on 1993 and a lively conversation it was.  We cover a lot of comic book ground this time out, including Maximum Carnage, my experiences with Reign of the Supermen, Lois and Clark, me getting a girlfriend, the beginning of my senior year and, sadly, the death of my mother.  After that Shag and I get into the whys and hows the comic industry took a tumble in the nineties.

Episode 93 A: 1993 or “Bleeping 1993″

Remember the one or two times when I would split an episode up over two episodes and call it “Episode # Whatever Part 1″ and “Episode # Whatever Part 2″?  Remember when I said that I wouldn’t be doing that anymore?  Yeah, had to break that rule for this episode mainly because it would throw off the episode numbering to talk about 1993 in episode 94.  I may have to do this again for 1997 depending on how long that particular installment goes.

For this portion of ‘93 Shag and I open the show with some e-mails, which gives us an excuse to talk about All-Star Squadron and New Mutants.  Plus an e-mail from Thomas Deja gives a run down on who Pete Wisdom was, which I appreciated.  After an A Pup Named Scooby-Doo reference and the usual musical montage we dive right into 1993.  Topics include the end of Funeral for a Friend, how readers were reacting to the Post Death of Superman material, Destiny’s Hand from Justice League America, the Return of Barry Allen from Flash, the introduction of the Milestone Universe, the production of Big River that I was a part of in the spring of 1993,  my junior prom and how that ties into Adventures of Superman #500, Knightfall and why I wasn’t buying too many comics in the early part of the summer of 1993.

As usual you can check out Shag’s Internet content at Once Upon a Geek and Firestorm Fan.  If you haven’t checked these blogs out yet do so now.

Come back on Wednesday for the DragonCon episode and then come back on Friday for the rest of 1993.

Episode 92: 1992 or 16 and Life

Well, it is a day later than I wanted it to be but here is Episode 92 of the show, which continues the 13 part series looking back at my comic book collecting history.  This week I am very pleased to have the Irredeemable Shag with me to discuss 1992, which was one of the biggest years in comic book history.  Not only do we discuss the creation of Image Comics but we also discuss the Batman books, a bit about Batman Returns,  the 10 issue Justice Society of America title, Spider-Man’s 30th Anniversary, Marvel 2099, Eclipso: The Darkness Within, the Marvel Universe Series III card set, the Death of Superman and more.  In between all of that we go into me turning 16, the art of the mixed tape, Shag’s career as a comic store manager in addition to other anecdotes.  The episode runs a little over two hours but we had a ball recording it.

As usual you can check out Shag’s Internet content at Once Upon a Geek and Firestorm Fan.  If you haven’t checked these blogs out yet do so now.

Next week; if all goes well Shag will be back to discuss 1993.  It will probably be a little depressing towards the end for reasons both comic book and personal.

Episode 91: 1991 or “The Year Nearly Without Comics”

This week I continue the 13 part look back into my past (all leading up to the epic episode 100) with 1991.  1991 was kind of an odd year for me and comics.  Because of various factors that are revealed during the episode I didn’t get to buy a whole heck of a lot of books during the course of the year.  So this episode has a lot of personal, non-comic book related anecdotes as well, so heads up as far as that goes.  I do discuss Clark’s engagement to Lois in the Superman books, Armageddon 2001, War of the Gods, Superman: The Man of Steel, X-Men, X-Force as well as the second series of Marvel Universe cards.  All of this and some Ask Mike Questions and a few e-mails to boot.

I have been guest starring on other podcasts lately and two of those hit this week.  The first being Starkville’s House of El with my good buddy Big Honkin’ Steve.  I appeared on episode 126 of that series where we discuss the history of General Zod.  Additionally I was on an episode of Back to the Bins with Scott Gardner, where we talk about two random back issues.  Scott is also the co-host of Two True Freaks, along with his friend Chris, and if you are looking for some great commentary on comic books and Star Trek and Star Wars then check out Two True Freaks because it is well worth your time.

Next week…1992…with the Irredeemable Shag!

Special Report: Disney Buys Marvel (Featuring Your Good Buddy Chase)

Hey, everyone.  Normally Views not the type of podcast to cover up to the minute hype regarding comic books.  I like to pick and choose the current stuff I talk about and spend most of my time going on and on about the comics of the past.  Sometimes, though, a bit of news will come down the pike that is hard for even me to ignore and I think Disney buying Marvel definitely fits into that category.  The news that did indeed rock the comic book world hit on Monday and my good buddy Chase from 2 in 1 Showcase thought it might be a good idea to sit down and talk about.

So here is the fruits of our effort.  We spent a little over an hour discussing the matter and covered it from just about every angle.  From comics to animation to film to theme parks we talk about it and a few other things here and there because it is Views From The Longbox a.k.a. Mike Likes To Go On Tangents.

I thank Chase a bunch of times in the show but I will do it again here.  He and I have been talking for some time about getting together to record and it is kind of cool that we got to talk about this.  Chase definitely brought the noise because he knows a crap load more about Disney than I do and I hope that y’all get a kick out of us jawing about the biggest event in the comic book world from the last ten years.

As mentioned Chase is one of the three hosts of 2 in 1 Showcase, a show that was one of three podcasts that made me think, “Hey, that podcasting thing looks like fun!”  Blake and Chase and Mike put out a quality cast just about every week and I have been big fans of theirs for a long time so if you haven’t checked them out yet do so now.

Come back tomorrow for Episode 91.

Three episodes in one week.  Take that, August!

Episode 90: 1990 or “They Got Comics That Big in Texas?’

Well, it’s been over a month and despite putting out two episodes of the two “Views mini-series” I am currently producing a new episode of Views From The Longbox is here and hopefully I still have an audience to support it.

This week I continue my thirteen part look at a youth squandered on comic books (all leading up to the epic episode 100) with the flashback to the year that was 1990.  After a diatribe which may be ill conceived I get into a year that had a lot more going on than I originally thought it would when I was planning this episode out.  Highlights of this episode include the greatness that were the Superman books in 1990, my trip to Texas, the day I realized I was, in fact, an addict, Spider-Man #1, the Who’s Who Binder Edition, Superman gets engaged, Tim Drake becomes Robin and even a little bit on the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I have appeared on several other podcasts of late.  You can check me out of the first, second and third part of this month’s Spider-Man Crawlspace Podcast as well as an episode of Between the Panels.  Check them out because I had a lot of fun on both shows.

Come back on Wednesday for the next episode.

No really.  I promise.  It will be here on Wednesday.  Well, late Wednesday, but Wednesday nonetheless.

Episode 89: 1989 or “Confirmed Batman Fan”

After a three week absence I am back with another chapter in the series of episodes focusing on the first 13 years of me seriously collecting comics all leading up to the “epic” episode 100.  This week is 1989 and after reading some e-mails I get into that year.  Highlights include the start of the Superman story arc Exile, turning 13, a flashback to plagiarism, why the first Superman Sourcebook from Mayfair Games was all that, a bag of chips and ranch dressing on the side, the build up to Batman, a trip to Georgia, the beginnings of the eighth grade and why everything after Batman came out was kind of a downer.  This doesn’t account for the many descriptions of comics I was reading at the time, a few personal digressions, a really lousy segue way what else was going on in the world of comics in 1989.

One quick note or I guess apology would be the better term.  I usually pimp my semi-regular co-host Shag’s blogs (Once Upon a Geek and Firestrom Fan) but for some reason didn’t do so this time.  Frankly I have no idea why.  Maybe I was just tired.  So check out those blogs if you haven’t already.

I made mention at the beginning of the episode that I was a guest on the always awesome Geek Out Loud last week.  Click on the link to find that episode.  Big Honkin’ Steve and I had a ball recording that and we are talking about me making a guest appearance on one of Steve’s other podcast Starkville House of El in the next few weeks.

I am also panelist on the Spider-Man Crawlspace Podcast.  The first part of that came out last week as well, so check that out if you want to here me play well with others.

Finally next week I will be recording with Thomas and Derrick from the movie podcast Better in the Dark.  I even play a short promo for them at the end of the episode so if you are even remotely interested in the cinema give them a listen.  I heartily recommend them.

I have been cranking out the reviews as well.  Check out my thoughts on Amazing Spider-Man number 599 and 600 as well as Superman/Batman #62.

Episode 88: 1988 or “The First Step Into A…Somewhat Larger World”

If you are a fan of the longer episodes then this is the one for you.  Continuing my twelve thirteen part series leading up the epic episode 100 I take a look at what was going on for both me personally and later in the episode the world in general in the year 1988.  Hear about my 12th birthday, what the sixth grade was like for me, the summer that saw a trip to not only Ocean City, Maryland but  Niagara Falls as well, getting glasses, getting braces, entering junior high, the death of Robin and finally becoming full on addicted to comic books.  Before all of that there is the usual collection of e-mails, Ask Mike Questions and updates on what is currently on the reading stack.

Oh, and there is an animal anatomy lesson at the beginning of the episode.  Just a heads up.

Episode 87: 1987 or “Year One”

Welcome, one and all to the first of a twelve part series of episodes of Views From The Longbox.  I am ramping up towards episode 100 and because of that I wanted to do something a little different.  As long time listeners of the show already know 1987 was my “year one” of collecting.  Despite reading comics for several years before that and even assembling a meager collection I didn’t start buying a series of comics until May or June of ‘87 and since we are at episode 87 I thought it would be neat to use the next twelve or so installments to talk about a year in my life of being a hopeless comic book addict.  Episode 88 will cover 1988, episode 89 will be about 1989 and so on.  Not only will I talk about comics I read at the time during those years but other noteworthy books and events that I either read later or haven’t gotten around to as of yet.  All of this is just the preamble to the epic episode 100 but it should be a fun way to spend the rest of the summer.

Also it is a great way to keep from having to wrack my currently addled and distracted brain for a subject to talk about.  Either way it works.

Hopefully Shag will join me on a few of these as well as some other people if I can arrange it.  I’ll also be reading e-mails, answering a few Ask Mike questions as well as the other features I’ve been pretty good about keeping up with.

I will point you to the widget to the right that has a link to listener Paul Spataro’s fundraising page.  Paul wrote me an e-mail regarding his participation in the Walk To Find a Cure.  I played some audio from Paul in the episode so if you can spare an extra dollar or two or fifty click on the link and help Paul out.

Episode 86: Hal Jordan’s Festival of Fun Part 1

This week I welcome to the show Thomas Deja, host of DJ Comics Cavalcade and co-host of Better in the Dark, and we spend nearly two hours talking about Hal Jordan.  Recently I have done some re-thinking about my feelings towards Hal and I invited Thomas, a big Hal fan himself, to share in this festival of fun dedicated to the the good Mr. Jordan.  We cover a good twenty years worth of comics including the origin of the Hal Jordan Green Lantern, why a guy in a band uniform can indeed become a super villain, the Hard Traveling Heroes days, the blind spot in my Green Lantern reading that is the late seventies and early eighties, John Stewart becoming GL, the Green Lantern Corps era and finally the Action Comics Weekly year (or so).  We talked so long we didn’t get to the Gerard Jones years, but that is why I am calling this part 1 because in a month or so Thomas and I are getting together again to jaw about Hal’s early nineties adventures.

As I mentioned Thomas is part of two podcasts.  There’s DJ Comics Cavalcade, where Thomas spends the odd numbered episodes talking about the Silver Age Green Lantern books and the even talking about the Tales From Suspense Captain America stories.  Then there is Better in the Dark, a movie podcast that Thomas co-hosts with his friend Derrick.  Both are well worth your time and are a heck of a lot of fun.

Welcome back, y’all.  This week Shag and I team up for what I think turned out to be one of our better conversations on this show.  We start things off with Shag finally getting the chance to tell us how he got into comics lo those many years ago when horse drawn carriages were the major mode of transportation and a candy bar was a nickel.  All joking aside Shag explains how he became a comic book addict before getting into a few Ask Shags that the Irredeemable one has been wanting to tackle.  This leads into us asking a few questions that really have no answers but made for some spirited debate nonetheless.

Quick warning; Shag’s audio is not spot on perfect in places.  At the time of recording he was in a hotel somewhere in Florida and the Internet connection wasn’t rock solid.  It is passable and much better than I have heard on some podcasts but I figured you all deserved a heads up.

Shag has two sites on the ‘net that you can visit.  There’s Once Upon a Geek, his week daily blog that concerns itself with all things geek, though there are a lot of comic book and Dr. Who posts to be had.  There’s also Firestorm Fan, a less than daily but still very entertaining blog centered around those who wore the mantle of Firestorm and before you joke about Firestorm being a “mantle” be warned that I have a soft spot for the Nuclear Man, so you best check yourself before you wreck yourself.

Quick reminder; I have a giveaway going on here that I did a pretty good job of ripping off from Major Spoilers and making my own.  Check out the widget to the right or the page above marked WFTLB OFFICIAL POSTER GIVEAWAY for the full details.

Episode 84: Ask Mike and Other Distractions

This week on Views I rely heavily on the kindness of strangers.  For various reasons that I won’t get into here I couldn’t get do the leg work that a main feature requires so I cobbled an episode together composed mainly of posts from the Views Forums under the Ask Mike a Question thread.  I manage to cover a variety of subjects including Superboy, Kid Flash, Final Crisis, my thoughts on consistency of character and event books.  It was a lot of fun and I hope you think so too.

I make mention of the Superman: Ending Battle trade in this week’s episode.  That’s why the cover of said book is at the top of this post.
